Risk Management and Decision Processes Center

About the Center

One of the Center's great strengths is its multidisciplinary approach to research, and its active involvement of senior representatives from the public and private sectors. Researchers bring to the Center expertise in numerous disciplines, including:

Decision analysis, to develop formal models of decision making;
Economics, to explore the role of incentives, tradeoffs, regulations, and benefit/cost analyses;
Insurance risk management, to investigate insurance as a policy tool for managing risk;
Political science, to look at the dynamics of institutions and legislation; and
Psychology, to address how individuals and groups make judgments and decisions under conditions of risk and uncertainty.

Issues are analyzed from many viewpoints, including the perspectives of the consumer, organizations, governments, and nations. Representatives from a range of public and private settings bring real-world perspectives to the Center's quest to understand the concept of risk.

Advisory Committee

The Advisory Committee plays a vital role in shaping the agenda for the Center's research. The approximately 20-member committee is composed of top-level representatives from the public and private sectors who draw on their experience and expertise to evaluate Center activities.

Advisory Committee members meet annually to discuss the operations of the Center and to plan its future directions. Selected researchers present their latest findings at the meetings, and Committee members engage them in a challenging exchange regarding the practical significance, strengths, and weaknesses of their research.

Corporate Associates

The Corporate Associates Program provides a strong link between the Center's research findings and the environmental, academic, industry, insurance, and public sector entities that will ultimately implement those findings. Corporate Associates review the research progress of the Center and are invited to participate in research studies.

Through its highly-regarded Corporate Associates Roundtables, the program brings together top-level corporate decision makers with representatives from the public sector and the environmental community to discuss specific risk decisions in an off-the-record setting. From these discussions have come numerous instructional cases used to stimulate further discussion and to serve as teaching materials in risk management courses.

Corporate Associates are invited to all Center conferences and seminars. They receive the Center's newsletter and early distribution of Center publications and research findings.
